❍ With the increased use of drones, unmanned air vehicle (UAV), commercial use has become popular in many industries such as logistics, delivery, photography, security, and rescue operations.
❍ As regulations involving drones ease, the drone delivery market is expected to grow. Flight types such as BVLOS, beyond visual line of sight, have gotten approved for testing in areas such as Dallas, Texas. Meanwhile, Fort Worth Texas has become the first major U.S city to permit commercial drone deliveries. Major U.S company, Walmart, will be the first to participate in offering drone delivery from certain locations.
❍ The technology that is being used for these drone deliveries is being developed in innovation zones in north Fort Worth. As the drone testing takes place more acceptable restrictions and regulations will be put into place. Current regulations that seem strict could be changed depending on the response from the general public on what they like and do not like. Companies such as UPS Flight Forward and Amazon Prime Air have also recently received FAA approval for commercial drone BVLOS tests and are attempting to expand their use of drones into logistics and delivery.
❍ As the U.S government eases restrictions, drone delivery services are expected to increase for companies such as Walmart and Amazon, two of the biggest retailers in the U.S.A. Walmart currently operates 34 drone delivery hubs in the U.S for goods such as groceries, household items, and over the counter medications. Walmart is looking to scale up to 40,000 deliveries per year. Meanwhile, Amazon continues to test small package deliveries using drones while also accelerating its own growth.
□ 상업용 드론에 가장 적합
❍ As drone technology continues to improve, new high-performance drones are starting to emerge equipped with high-resolution cameras and LiDAR sensors. Collecting aerial photography and mapping hard to reach places has become possible.
❍ Commercial drones that are equipped with high-resolution cameras and LiDAR sensor are widely used as crucial tools in industries such as construction, agriculture, entertainment, and real estate thanks to their extremely high accuracy.
❍ The U.S has seen an increase and momentum shift in precision agriculture, which uses ICT, information and communication technologies, to maximize crop production. The entire productivity and efficiency stages of agriculture has improved over time thanks to precision agriculture offering real-time monitoring of crops and farmland conditions, pest detection, soil conditions, and even future crop growth patterns.

❍ According to reports from Kotra, “in May of 2024, the U.S drone imports have totaled $314.92 billion, an increase of over 52.1% from last year. South Korea is the sixth largest importer of U.S drones, with imports reaching $3.35 million through may of this year”. South Korea’s market share of imported drones from the U.S might be 1%, but it is showing strong yearly growth. This is especially due to the overall increase in drone imports and reaction from the Chinese import ban.
□ DJI 드론 시장 지배력 지속
❍ DJI drones, the largest drone seller in the current global market has an estimated 70% share of global drone sales. Even with the federal American Security drone act and other bans targeting Chinese drones, DJI remains dominant in the U.S.
❍ According to one research done by the Association for Unscrewed Vehicle Systems International, AUVSI, Chinese made drones, including DJI, make up for almost 90% of the U.S hobby drone market, 70% of the industrial drone market, and 80% of the first responder market. While Chinese built drones are dominating the market, non-Chinese built drones are slowly gaining their share of the commercial drone market. This in turn creates troubles for DJI, as they lose market share and the U.S government strengthens regulations on Chinese built drones.
❍ The U.S House of Representatives is currently voting to bar drones made by DJI from operating in the U.S. This is another example of a series of measures aimed at Chinese drone manufacturers. The bill would need approval from the senate before it could become law, which would prohibit DJI products from operating on U.S communications infrastructure. It would not prevent existing DJI drones from operating in the U.S. with DJI selling more than half of all drones in the U.S, this bill is critical for Chinese drone makers.
❍ As the U.S commercial drone market is expected to grow at a CAGR rate of 9.2%, it will continue to see growth with increased government support, flight testing, technological advancements, varied uses in agriculture, and strict laws with Chinese drone makers.
□ 미국 드론 시장에 대한 우려
❍ The largest American drone companies as of yet are not able to produce technology at the pace, scope, or cost of Chinese competitor DJI because U.S drone production and supply chain capabilities are limited. Tackling these problems will be critical if the U.S drone industry wishes to become a market leader. What is certain is that as regulations keep hitting Chinese drone manufacturers, opportunities will arise for other manufacturers.
